POSSIBLE USES:
|
33 Union Square (which is really Somerville Ave.)
Somerville, MA
from Porter Square,
Cambridge
from Central Square, Cambridge
from I-93 South
from the Mass. Pike
A NOTE ON PARKING: I have received permission
from Citizen's Bank to have people that use my studio be able
to park in their parking lot behind the bank when the bank
is not in session. Unfortunately this does not include Saturday
mornings as the bank is open then! But, for future reference---
if you are coming out the front door of the studio, the bank
is across the street/intersection, and a little to the right.
Access to the parking lot is off the side street to the left
of the bank when facing it. So follow the directions below,
but as you are coming into Union Square on Somerville Ave,
stay in your left hand lane so that you can start to curve
around to the left at the first stoplight by the studio. DO
NOT curve all the way onto Bow Street, but instead go straight
onto the side street that follows the lefthand edge of the
Citizen's Bank and then turn right into the parking lot.
As is true in most of Boston, oneway streets prevail in
Union Square (Somerville), so I have routed you perhaps a
slightly longer way, but hopefully clearer in the long run,
as it will bring you into the square from the right direction
on the right one way street!
FROM PORTER SQUARE, CAMBRIDGE:
If you are coming down Mass. Ave. from Arlington/North Cambridge,
when you get to the Porter Square T stop (big flying red sculpture
and Porter Square Shopping Center on your left), take the
left hand fork at that set of lights onto Somerville Ave.
instead of staying straight on Mass. Ave. Follow Somerville
Ave. toward Union Square. Soon after a Market Basket on your
right, the street turns into a one way street the way you
are going, and the street numbers are in the triple digits.
After New Asia Chinese Restaurant (on the right), the street
numbers turn to the double digits inexplicably. Continue
with "Almost There," below.
FROM CENTRAL SQUARE, CAMBRIDGE:
Coming from the river on Mass Ave, turn right at the stoplight
at Prospect Street (the heart of Central Square). Go several
blocks, through 2(?) lights and turn left at a stoplight where
there is a Hess gas station (Hampshire Street). This takes
you into Inman Square. At the next stoplight, go straight
across (it might bear ever so slightly to your right) onto
Beacon Street (Rosie's Bakery should be on your right now).
Go past a Johnny's Foodmaster. Go through the stoplight intersection
with Dali Restaurant on your left and Panini and the Wine
Cask on your right. At your next light, turn right onto Park
Street. Cross the railroad tracks, go to the end, and turn
right onto Somerville Ave. Follow Somerville Ave. towards
Union Square (you are only a few blocks away at this point).
Pass a Market Basket Supermarket on the right. Soon thereafter
the street turns into a one way street the way you are going,
and the street numbers are in the triple digits. Pass New
Asia Chinese Restaurant on the right. Soon therafter, the
street numbers turn to the double digits inexplicably. Continue
with "Almost There," below.
FROM 93 HEADING SOUTH Toward
Boston:
93S to exit 30 (Mystic Ave., Somerville). Turn left at lights
at end of exit ramp onto South 38. Turn right at 2nd light
(St. Polycarp Church) onto Temple Street. It curves slightly
to the left, and ends on Broadway at a light. Turn right and
immediately get into left hand turn lane and turn left at
lights onto School Street (between 2 banks).
Go through 3 lights (and up and down a hill)- it ends on
Somerville Ave. Turn left.
Soon thereafter, the
street numbers turn to the double digits inexplicably. Continue
with "Almost There," below.
FROM MASS PIKE:
Get off at the Cambridge exit. Head toward Central Square/Cambridge
(not Brighton). Just follow that road into Central Square.
When you reach the intersection of Mass. Ave. at the heart
of Central Square, cross Mass. Ave. and continue to go straight.
You are now on Prospect Street. Go several blocks, through
2(?) lights and turn left at a stoplight where there is a
Hess gas station (Hampshire Street). This takes you into Inman
Square. At the next stoplight, go straight across (it might
bear ever so slightly to your right) onto Beacon Street (Rosie's
Bakery should be on your right now).
ALMOST THERE...
The class is held at #33, on the right, a glass door with
33 on it (not 33 1/2) and a small sign saying Third Life Studio,
in between the store fronts of Elegant Furniture (to the left
of the door) and G&T Custom Tailoring (To the right of
the door). It is in a 3-story old brick building with a green
facade. The door is just before the first stoplight in Union
Square. You have gone too far if you go through that light.
Parking is on the street. Usually there is no problem parking,
but allow a little extra time. If there is absolutely nowhere
to park, you can park in the Market Basket parking lot further
back on Somerville Ave., or in the Citizen's Bank lot after
banking hours. To return to Market Basket, do not go through
the lights, but get into your left hand lane and curve around
onto Bow Street, continuing to turn or bear left at every
option until it ends at a right/left split (go left to come
back towards the studio, or turn right to get onto Somerville
Ave towards the Market Basket). If you get lost, just ask
directions. You want to be on Somerville Ave., coming into
Union Square from Porter Square, Cambridge. You might want
to look at a map also. It is not as hard as it sounds! But
there is not a phone available there, so allow a little extra
time to find it for the first time!
